SUPERVISOR JURSIK STATEMENT ON COUNTY EXECUTIVE VETO MESSAGE

(Milwaukee) – Supervisor Patricia Jursik issued the following statement about action from the County Executive. Once again the County Executive provides a veto one day before the full County Board meeting with a politically charged veto message.

The actual veto message came to me only after it had been publically posted even though the Executive’s legislative director sat down with my office along with Director Nelson Soler for the purpose of providing any clarifications needed. The Executive’s representative offered no objections to the Resolution at that time.

With the actual veto message, the County Executive provided “testimony” from Maria Monreal-Cameron, President of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and Steve Baas, Vice-President of the Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce (MMAC). Neither objector came forward during the appropriate public hearing on this matter. While the County Executive has a history of charging the Board with micro-managing and interfering in administrative functions, the County Executive is now playing super-legislator.
In response to this veto and as Chairman of ECD, I will commit to the following:
1. I will place the addresses of all chambers across our county on the mailing list for public meeting notices of the ECD committee even if they have not specifically requested to be added as provided in the Wisconsin Open Meetings provisions.
2. I will invite MMAC and Hispanic Chamber of Commerce to come before the ECD for an instructional meeting on governance in Milwaukee County. As a deliberative branch, the legislature works in committee structures and conducts public hearings at the committee level. The committee will provide these chambers with an opportunity to express concerns they may have with economic development in Milwaukee County.

3. With respect to this veto, I will ask the full board to refer the veto back to committee to give Ms. Monreal-Cameron and Mr. Baas an opportunity to vet their concerns on the specific resolution with the appropriate deliberative branch of government in an open meeting structure.

While this may not be as satisfying as having exclusive access to the Super-Legislator/County Executive of this government, it will be deliberative, not only for these two, but anyone else that may have a concern. As Chair of ECD I promise a fair and open forum where everyone will be treated with courtesy.
