The Equal Rights Commission for our city is like all the appointed citizenry-selected groups are to provide clear and precise guidance per their area. This is EQUAL RIGHTS.
We expect monthly reports from the Equal Rights Committee to show how public policy and public relations are contributing to the growth of our city and its effectiveness.
We notice that this body collaborates and depend on the "Department of Employee Relations" and "City Attorney's Office" for efficacy. Our notes show, change of leadership in the Employee Relations Department since the election of the NEW city attorney. There has been conflicts of interest and delays to the city attorney's office that affects personnel, morale, due diligence, and peaceful transmission of both offices.
This has interrupted our legal process as a CITY, especially since we had costly high-profile suits in the hopper. We, the People - Milwaukeeans, will need this committee to assure us that this is abated and corrections are made per the Equal Rights Committee authority.
PURPOSE: To investigate complaints and eliminate or remedy any violation of fair housing, employment or public accommodations laws through conciliation, persuasion, education or litigation. Investigators and examiners from the Department of Employee Relations will assist the Commission while enforcement will be done through the City Attorney's Office. The Commission also oversees the City of Milwaukee's Paid Sick Leave Ordinance.
COMPOSITION: Eleven members representing a cross-section of the community, appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the Common Council to serve three-year terms, staggered.
