ELLIS HAIZLIP AND THE BIRTH OF BLACK POWER TV

Right on the heels of the Civil Rights Movement, one fearless black pioneer reconceived a Harlem Renaissance for a new era, ushering giants and rising stars of black American culture onto the national television stage.
He was hip.
He was smart.
He was innovative, political and gay.
In his personal fight for social equality, this man ensured the Revolution would be televised.
The man was Ellis Haizlip. The Revolution was SOUL!
Haizlip was the host and executive producer of SOUL!, the first “black Tonight Show.” In 1968, SOUL! was launched as a local, New York broadcast. In 1969 the series rolled out nationwide on PBS, on WNET Channel 13. By 1973, Haizlip had produced over 130 hour-long shows featuring a dazzling array of A-list guests: Sidney Poitier, Harry Belafonte, James Baldwin, Stevie Wonder, Maya Angelou, Ashford and Simpson, Nikki Giovanni, Al Green and Muhammad Ali -- even a sixteen-year-old Arsenio Hall doing magic tricks.

Founded by the award-winning filmmaker John Ridley, Milwaukee’s new creative hub No Studios, located on 1037 West McKinley Avenue in downtown Milwaukee launched this weekend. The open house included film screenings, beer tasting, and socializing and mingling with like-minded folks.
As one immediately enters No Studios, artists, writers, and the like feel at home. The creative juices flow without hesitation. Despite Los Angeles and New York City are often associated with such entertainment industries, the perfect combination of Milwaukee Film, Milwaukee Filmmaker Alliance, and No Studios puts Milwaukee on the map to have a flourishing film industry and so much more.

  • I've GOT TO BE ME - Sammy Davis Jr.
    • 6:00 p.m. At the Oriental Theatre Main
    • 1 Hr. 52 Min.
    • Follow the legendary Sammy Davis Jr. as he navigates the racial prejudices and shifting political terrain of 20th century America. A documentary worthy of this complex, contradictory, and complicated figure, I've Gotta Be Me explores the career and art of this larger-than-life performer who found himself bracketed by the bigotry of White America and the scruitiny of civil rights-era Black America. New interviews (Norman Lear, Billy Crystal, and Whoopi Goldberg) combine with never-before-seen photos to provide an entirely fresh look at this icon who sat at the crossroads of cultural/racial identity.
  • MR. SOUL - 10-31
    • 2 Hr. 2 Min.

Before Oprah, before Arsenio, there was SOUL!, a remarkable public television variety show wildly ahead of its time. Hosted by Ellis Haizlip (hip, smart, innovative, and unapologetically gay), SOUL! was a celebration of all things Black culture—with topics ranging from soul music to literature, poetry, politics, and everything in between—with a dazzling array of A-list guests (James Baldwin, Nikki Giovanni, and Stevie Wonder, to name a few). Follow this groundbreaking phenomenon from conception to its final episode in this stirring reminder of the power of representation in
      media.
