SHOW 114 - Shorewood Schools Racial Disorder & Home Gardening

SHOW 114 - RACIAL DISORDER

APRIL 24, 2019
MILWAUKEE CITY/COUNTY || SHOW 114 sheds light on
another local school district in the Milwaukee area on RACIAL DISORDER This time it is curriculum-based.

It is dealing with an assignment by a Gym teacher in Middle School.  The assignment asked for research of "Slave Games"

Back in October 2018, the use of the N-word in the play, To Kill a Mocking Bird was hampered and an emotionally charged special meeting was held to address the village concerns.

A Shorewood Gym Teacher has been placed on leave for having African American students to research "slave game" as an assignment.  The assignment drew criticism from Dr. ReShunda Stephens, a parent of one of the students given the assignment.

Dr. Stephens noted past racially related issues - one related to "colored club" and an issue dealing with her oldest daughter before she graduated.
============

Our Guest, Dr. ReShunda Stephens has 3 daughters that attend Shorewood - one just graduated and recently returned from a scholarship in Australia.

Dr. Stehens is an alumnus of Shorewood High School.

The show discussion starts and ends with "Solution-Building".  As a concerned parent, educator, ex-candidate for Shorewood School Board, she speaks of the importance of training, protection for students while in school, and healthy and non-threatening environments for her daughters and ALL students.

Shorewood is a Village of 13,162 at the 2010 census.
The student population is 2100.

Earth Day - 4-22-19 -- CBS EARTH MATTERS

Vladimir Duthiers will report live for “CBS This Morning” from the Amazon on the impact of deforestation in South America. Mark Phillips will report on how major cities are trying to curb CO2 emissions.

CLICK
On April 22, 1970, CBS News marked the first ever Earth Day with a special report anchored by Walter Cronkite. "The gravity of the message of Earth Day still came through: act or die," Cronkite said at the time.
CBS News correspondents reported on protests, clean-up efforts, and calls to action from all over the country. It was the start of the modern environmental movement. Now 49 years later, we are covering the environmental issues of the day -- this time from every corner of the globe.
We're in the Amazon rainforest in South America where deforestation threatens everything from the plants and animals to the indigenous tribes who live there. We'll take you to New Delhi, India, one of the most polluted cities in the world. We'll also meet the young people of South Africa leading a renewable energy revolution.
On the first Earth Day, Cronkite told viewers that cleaning up our planet would require both personal involvement and sacrifice. "Those who ignored Earth Day, well that's one thing. Those who ignore the crisis of our planet, that's quite another," he said.
