Curated by local teens, Souls of Young Folk is a post-screening forum using visual platforms to explore the experiences that shape how black youth see themselves. Following a screening of feature film Jinn, attendees will participate in a multifaceted dialogue focused on exploring personal identity.
The discussion also features the Art Start's Portrait Project, a multi-media exhibition giving young people the opportunity to portray complex narratives about their identities, asking the world to see them for how they choose to be seen.

Milwaukee Film's Black Lens program has received grants from
the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and HBO for programming at the
2018 Milwaukee Film Festival.
Black Lens received a $7,500 FilmWatch grant from the Motion
Picture Academy — the series' second such grant from the group that gives
out the Oscars — and $10,000 from HBO. The premium cable channel will
present two of the Black Lens short-film programs at this year's film festival,
along with a new juried award honoring diverse local filmmakers.

BLACK LENS
In 2014, Black Lens was created with a singular focus: to spotlight the incredible work of African-American filmmakers by bringing their films to the Milwaukee Film Festival. These filmmakers explore stories and topics that are rooted in the Black community but are relevant to a variety of audiences. Black Lens features fiction and documentary films from emerging and established voices and hosts events that inspire conversation, celebration, and community.
GET INVOLVED
The Black Lens Council membership program was launched in 2016 as a response to audiences’ desires to support and strengthen Black Lens' programming, initiatives, and engagement. Council members' support enhances many festival and year-round programs, which range from the
ticket donation program to sparking critical dialogues between African-American filmmakers and festival audiences to organizing social events, panel discussions, and interviews.
