An attempt to defame the name and character of Rep. Elizabeth Coggs

Milwaukee – On Monday, July 30, 2012, the Journal Sentinel PolitiFact Wisconsin posted that We Are Milwaukee are blatant liars when it comes to their truth-o-meter.

The primary election for sixth district State Senate is heating up. A few weeks ago, a campaign flyer with a picture of Gov. Scott Walker, Republican, referred to Rep. Elizabeth Coggs, D-Milwaukee, claims "millions of dollars in tax breaks" were paid for "by busting unions, cutting BadgerCare, and raising taxes on the poor and the middle class, thanks to Elizabeth Coggs' help.

The flyer is said to be paid for by a political organization, “We are Milwaukee”, an anti-Scott Walker group, which was registered with the Governor Accountability Board in March 2012. The said organization wants the public to believe that one Democratic Assembly member, Elizabeth Coggs, is working with the Governor and the Republicans.

The front of the flyer says: “we need leaders who will stand up to Scott Walker.”The back of the flyer list three Assembly bills (AB3, AB11, AB40) during the 2011-12 budget sessions, which they falsely claim Rep. Coggs voted in favor of. This occurrence is an attempt to smear and destroy Rep. Coggs name and character in the media before the August 14, 2012 primary election. The motivation behind this flyer is still unclear, but if one was to guess, I would say they really don’t want her to win.

On Wednesday, July 25, 2012, Rep. Coggs held a press conference to call for a clean campaign and for her opponents and their handlers to stop the lies.  “This is clearly a lie, let me repeat that, this is a lie.Not only did I oppose Act 10, but I stood on the floor of the Assembly in my orange t-shirt battling  Scott Walker while Senators Spencer Coggs, Lena Taylor, and other Senate Democrats bravely delayed the vote for as long as they could.I also opposed Scott Walker’s state budget,” said Rep. Coggs.

Alderwoman Milele Coggs said “as a resident of the 6th Senate District I was disgusted at anyone who chooses to lie, distort and misrepresent information to the voters for the sake of a win.”
Senator Lena Taylor said “Representative Elizabeth Coggs is very vocal about the interests of Milwaukee and a fighter for this community in the Wisconsin State Legislature and speaks the truth; I stand with my endorsement of Elizabeth Coggs as the next Senator of the Sixth District.”

As said before, the primary election will be held on Tuesday, August 14, 2012. Rep. Coggs is facing four other opponents in her race for sixth district State Senator.
