It is time for the word MINORITY to NOT be a reference of a Protective Class

MILWAUKEE(MPA) - Afternoon Flash - Mary Glass, Chair/CEO, Milwaukee Professionals Association/MPA announced on May 23, 2012, that MPA will be contacting elected officials - federal, state, local and global entities to use People of Color and Women or People of Color and Caucasian Women to replace a privilege and outdated reference.  The latter term is what has taken hold during the past years when it has come to the word in a "protective class" reference.  We see in almost every instance, if not every study, Caucasian women have gotten the bulk of the deal - contracts - setasides.

Glass said, "I prefer People of Color and Women" to allow broadness in the infrastructure and for building People of Color in a "pipeline growth.  We can readily see the advantages or disadvantages that will provide a 'playing field' and to drive a "level playing field".  It is otherwise hidden and creative people have proven to be deceptive.

As we continue to forge an agenda to curb the imposing Enduring Concentrated Poverty in Milwaukee, my office ask that those elected/appointed/hired/volunteered representatives seek to re-define, re-brand and un-trap Milwaukeeans in ways of image-building and upward mobility."

Milwaukee Professionals Association is asking that legislators begin to remove the word
"MINORITY" from our regulations and discussions.  It is just too limiting and restrictive.    After all, the people once referenced as "smaller in number - minority" are in-change -  locally, nationally and globally - changing to MAJORITY."
========================

Why the change?  Because of the connotation of less than and/or negative.

How about People of Color?
How about People of Color and Women -  to replace "minority".

How about naming those races and/or people you are talking about.
And, since the term "Minority" in government has become an exclusivity way for the Caucasian female, that is more reason to be specific.  Think about it.

What do you think?
