GRADY CROSBY - VP Public Affairs & Chief Diversity Officer
Johnson Controls
AUGUST 9, 2021
MILWAUKEE || Milwaukee Urban League had a Virtual Board Annual Board Meeting, the best part was the keynote speech by Grady Crosby.
Crosby gave a powerful address of what CSR/Corporate Social Responsibility means. He challenged the Urban League board and its leadership to subscribe to the principles of accountability and reporting for impactful and transformative changes in the neighborhoods. His delivery matches his purposeful role as a diversity director for Johnson Controls.
His specifics spoke to citizenship and closing the gaps between the corporate and neighborhood worlds. He noted Black Lives Matter, police brutal killings, and George Floyd's death last year and its impact on the world. He was eye-opening with his purpose of engagement, diversity-certain while sharing Johnson Control's gift of $2 Million to the Milwaukee Urban League for the growth of the people of the neighborhood. He spoke of gifts but money gifts should be preceded by a commitment of the reasons for the gift.
Critique
The President's Report by Dr. Eva Hall failed:
- To share African American businesses as members of the board of directors.
- To reveal members of the neighborhood that are PARTNERS around the table of planning and decision-making.
- To give "specific DATA" of impact for
- business credit report
- coat/clothing sharing
- driver's report
- email and phone outreach
- job fairs
- laptops
- lunch and learn
- summit attendees
- To have neighborhood representatives with testimonial accounts of good standing for the Urban League.
- To give EXPANDING advocacies and platforms that strengthen both the neighborhoods and the Urban League.
Given the many Caucasian-based corporations around the table - some not listed, to NOT have members of the African American neighborhoods is disrespectful and reducing the mega opportunity of "equity inclusion" citizenship.
