Richards Report - January 7, 2013

Rep. Jon Richards - 19th Dist.

MILWAUKEE - (MPA-LLC) , January 7, 2013
Keeping the promise of real bipartisanship

Dear Neighbor,

Today marks the start of the 101st Wisconsin State Legislature with the swearing in of new and returning members. Thank you for giving me the honor of representing you and for staying in touch and bringing your thoughts and ideas to me.

Republicans and Democrats alike campaigned on the promise of bipartisanship and working together. Real bipartisanship does not mean blindly acquiescing to those in power or accepting extreme positions that don’t align with the values of Wisconsin. Real bipartisanship means coming together honestly, engaging the public openly and transparently and doing the hard work of finding common ground solutions to the challenges facing Wisconsin. This is what was promised, this is what Wisconsinites expect and this is what needs to happen to move Wisconsin forward again.

On this first day of a new legislative session, we need to begin directing our energy on issues that truly matter to families and businesses across Wisconsin. For my part I will be focusing on creating jobs, supporting middle-class tax relief, closing gaps in health care coverage, supporting education, curbing gun violence and promoting open government. I have already drafted several measures to promote these ideas and will be working with you to pass as many as we can.

This year I will be serving on the Joint Finance Committee and look forward to working with you to craft a state budget that works for Wisconsin and reflects our values.

Today the governing begins in earnest, when promises made should become promises kept. It is time for the extremism to end and real bipartisanship to begin.

Sincerely,
JON RICHARDS
State Representative
Assembly District 19
